Goodreads asked Elliott Kay:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Elliott Kay Poor Man's Fight as a series has been in my head for roughly 15 years or so. Maybe a little longer. It started occurring to me at the tail end of my time in the Coast Guard. I didn't really know Tanner, Casey, Lauren & co. yet, but I knew the major plot points of the series. It was always about an untrustworthy gov't vs powerful corporations and space pirates. I also didn't come to the themes of debt and the whole corporate education scam until I had worked in public education and experienced a run of personal debt. The economic meltdown of 2008 was a big inspiration, too. Several moments from Rich Man's War are directly inspired by the events of that year.
