Goodreads asked Steve Merrick:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Steve Merrick I accepted that one of my favourite books is the kids classic, Alice In Wonderland. I had been playing with the idea of an adult sci fi equivalent, for a long time, but I was insecure about my skills as a writer, and happily held back before I wrote it. The latest book is The Konichiwa Collective. It is dedicated to Lewis Carroll after all. So it had to be good. The idea itself was a spin off on cryogenics, that I had played with but didn't include in the Navigator, my first book. Both are part of the Awash In Starlight series of books. Yet that theme came from the first book and grew, becoming what I think of as an homage to Mr Carroll, and an evolution into the realm of science fiction.
