Natalie asked Melissa Marr:

Why did you decide to become an author? Was there something or someone that inspired you to write?

Melissa Marr I have always been fascinated w stories. My family lived in a very rural area, & I grew up believing books were treasures. We didn't have a LOT of them bc they are expensive, but my mother took me to the library regularly. Mix a book love, no TV, and a family that was filled with outlandish stories told and retold, and I suspect this was inevitable. That said, I didn't think it was possible to do it as a JOB.

Luckily I wanted to teach, too, so with a combination of scholarship, loans, and working (up to 3 jobs at once one rough year) I put myself through college & grad school & became a teacher. I think that inspired me too. Studying lit for all those years led to teaching it, and then eventually, to writing. So it--like most life choices--isn't inspired by one thing or one person. It's those things all combined that led me here.
