are the books stand alone adventures, or should I read them with/between seasons? i'm a new Monk fan :)

Asterope They seem stand-alone. Each is its own case that's started and finished within the book. You can also read these out of order and skip around, many reviewers did so and I skipped one with no issue following along. Knowing the characters from the show adds to the enjoyment as it makes things easier to picture and you can get Monk's issues and personality, but I think even if you didn't watch the show you can still get a measure of enjoyment out of them as a cozy mystery series.
Roberta Some of the books tie in to certain episodes but they don't follow the series in any order. Only Mr. Monk is Miserable is a direct sequel to Mr. Monk Goes to Germany and picks up right where the previous book left off.
