Jimmy J. asked Erik Larson:

Erik—In "In The The Garden Of The Beasts," one of the main ideas I came away with was that the U.S. didn't want to fight Hitler because we had so much money tied up in the reconstruction of a post-WWI Europe. Am I wrong in thinking that you covertly slipped into the narrative that a lot of the American "elite" (define that as you will) prevented us from entering the war for years?

Erik Larson You are reading something into the book that was not there. I don't recall anywhere suggesting that the U.S. tolerated Hitler because of investment in post-war Europe. Possibly another book?
