During the writing of which of your books was the research the most surprising? Why?
Erik Larson
Most surprising--impossible to say. All my works of narrative nonfiction have surprised me, deeply. Though I suppose the research that left me most consistently tickled was that for Devil in the White City. I mean, just learning that Juicy Fruit gum was introduced to consumers at the World's Fair of 1893 delighted me no end.

Erik: I am a big fan of your work and look forward to reading Dead Wake. A few years ago the UKs Daily Mail reported that divers had explored the Lusitania wreck and found that the ship was carrying secret war material as the Germans had alleged all the time. Carrying the war material lead some to believe that it was a valid target. Does your book address this find and opinion? Thank you again for your work.

Mr. Larsen, I became an instant fan after _Devil_In_The_White_City_, and have read several of your other works. I have noticed that real historical events don't always cooperate by fitting into a novel-like plot. How much effort do you spend looking for just the right set of characters in a situation, so the story can to build to a satisfying finish?
