Carol
Carol asked Roxane Gay:

Hi, Roxane. I've recently finished a novel, my first, about a white woman in the 1990's righting a wrong she committed while teaching at a black college in the south in the 80's. One of my black male characters is an attorney. I loved Bad Feminist, and was surprised to read that you see black attorney characters as stereotypical. Can you elaborate? Thank you, Carol Morrison

Roxane Gay Hi Carol, I don't see black attorney characters as stereotypical. Instead I find it problematic when the only diversity in a story/film/TV show is by way of, for example, a black district attorney or other marginal character rather than one of the narrative's protagonists.
