And before you ask things like, "Why would you want to do that?" or "Don't you realize the original was the best one?" realize that I actually love the three sequels far more than the original. Yes, Rendezvous with Rama was genius in its way, but see my review of Rama Revealed, if you want to know why I think Gentry Lee made a good thing a lot better. I recommend the three sequels to people all the time because they feature one of my favorite characters in all of fiction, Nicole des Jardins.

No. If you read the first one, avoid this book and all others. You will be doing yourself a favor.
If you (for some reason) read this book first, I would assume you would be so put-off by the authors that you would not WANT to read the first book. Which would be a shame, as it is much, much better than this drivel.

The original is so excellent, I'm wondering why anyone would want to skip it. But to answer the question, I suppose it is not absolutely necessary to have read RwR to understand the sequels.... And I agree with other reviewers that the sequels are very much worth reading!

There is very little from the 1st book that you need to know. you can read the summary and/or reviews on amazon if you want to skip the 1st book.It is slow and needs patience but you will see a beautiful world considering when it was written.
Rama 2 is a much faster paced book and is a good place to start with some background as well
