asked:
I love this painting, but I have not read this book yet. Who this girl was still remains a puzzle. I am curious about this imaginary story. Hopefully, it will give me another perspective to appreciate this painting. There is also a movie based on this novel. Does anybody have read this book and also watched that movie? Is it good? Will it be better if I watch the movie first, and then read this book? Thank you!

I read the book and saw the film. Both were good, but the film had extraordinary sets and got the lighting and feel of the time period beautifully. Definitely a worth see.

I read the book first and was very sure then that I did not want to see the movie, because I really liked the book and did not want the movie to disappoint me. After a year or so I eventually did watch the movie and it did absolutely not disappoint me. It left some details, but helped me prepare for my literature speaking test as a refresher. However, I am glad I did watch it afterwards. The book isn't so difficult you should watch it first to understand it better. You can use your own fantasy to give the story an image.

I have not read the book yet, but know I will find historical inaccuracies in it so avoided it. The movie, although the acting is great also contains inaccuracies. As someone who has studied much of his poorly documented life, I would suggest dwelling on his art not a fictional biography. Perhaps Tim's Vermeer the movie and accompanying read might be a better suited use of time

Christine, I saw the movie first. Loved it. Then read the book. I liked the movie better: but then again, with Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth and those sets and costumes, not much could go wrong.
Richard Stein
Book, as usual, is better than the movie, but I enjoyed the movie just the same. I loved how scenes in the movie resembled Vermeer's canvases. Acting was good, but if you read the book first, you will get far more out of the movie.
