How does it affect a child psychologically, do you think, to go from a boy to a girl?
Nadia Hashimi
We are giving a lot more thought to gender today than we ever have in the past. I think the transition from boy to girl affects individuals differently. For each person, there are so many variables involved that it's hard to assign it one experience. Is he identifying as a girl or a boy? What age is he? Is his family supportive of or helpful in the transition? What country or context does he live in? Then there are the more individual factors. Two people can go through the same experience and have totally different outcomes. I do think, though, that any gender transition has the potential to be extremely difficult on a child because they are in various stages of establishing identity and moving from one gender to another in any country has significant challenges. These are kids who are at risk for anxiety, gender dysphoria or other issues.

Hi Nadia, I just wanted to say I'm in awe of your writing! I just finished Sparks like Stars and loved every bit of it. I loved the way you created a balance in Sitara's character as a bold and independant woman while equally carrying a vulnerable, empathetic side to her. Is there a specific book you've read that you keep going back to, in times of motivation?

I heard on a podcast you did with C.P. Leslie of New Historical Books (http://newbooksinhistoricalfiction.com/2014/10/21/nadia-hashimi-the-pearl-that-broke-its-shell-william-morrow-2014/) that you are coming out with a new book in the summer of 2015. Can you tell me a bit about this new book? (It was a very good interview, BTW, and I would recommend that your readers check it out on the website above.)

Hi Nadia, I invested in "When the Moon is Low" for our book club and it has been lovingly received. Everyone has said it is so compelling. I even love the cover and texture of the pages as fine detail. The refugee theme for the book is so relevant today. We want to know how things work out for Saleem & whether the family are reunited? Would you consider writing a sequel? Best regards x
