When Al goes through the rabbit hole, he changes little bits, and the card on the hat changes from green to yellow, meaning he is doing some damage, but not a lot. As Jake makes bigger changes, the colour of the card changes, until it turns black, and the Card man (who has to keep track of all the differences, and the original) goes mad and kills himself. King explains it in the last section of the novel, when he meets the new Green Card man, Zack Lang from Seattle, who is back to having a green card (he is not insane yet, but will be soon!)(less)

Mcwdnw Thank you for the answer. It makes so much sense to me now. I am not used to reading King any more, especially a book that big!
