I (personally) think it's appropriate for mature teens, it does have some heavy situations like prostitution (non-graphic) and violence (graphic). It really depends on the persons maturity.

Some pretty heavy themes in this series. Some of the passages are pretty emotionally devastating, and the whole premise is pretty grim. The series isn't filled with violence and death, but it handles these things in such a way that it feels traumatic when it does happen.
