A Goodreads user asked Andrew Pyper:

Clearly, The Demonologist needed research and a background in literary works to write it. How much research do you tend to put into your writing, and how much did you need to do when writing The Damned?

Andrew Pyper Generally, there is two kinds of research required for my books. There is the book research (in the case of The Damned, reading the Inferno by Dante, the history of Detroit, accounts of near-death experience, etc.) and then there is the physical research - going to the place you are writing about and soaking up its sights and smells and textures. For The Damned this meant spending time in Detroit and Royal Oak and getting a level of intimacy with those environments that Google and Wikipedia simply cannot provide.
