Goodreads asked Kevin Egan:

How do you get inspired to write?

Kevin Egan I work at inspiration, usually by asking “what if” questions. Over the course of many years, I have published science fiction, literary short stories, and golf mystery novels. My current writing interest (over the last five years) have been novels and short stories suggested by my day job at the New York County Courthouse (the courthouse that appears in the opening credits of Law & Order). Unlike the show, my ideas are not “ripped from the headlines.” Instead, I think of a standard courthouse situation and then ask myself, “What if this happened instead?” Candidly, not every question leads to a brilliant idea. But most times, the question generates an idea with enough traction that I can work into a story.
