See http://forvo.com/word/ove/#sv to hear it pronounced in Swedish. A somewhat close approximation in English is ooh-ve. ve as in "vegetarian" and ooh like the standalone expression of dismay, not the oo sound of "glue"

My son, my Grandfather and My Great Grandfather are all named Ove. My Great Grandfather was from Norway. We all pronounce it like O-V. (which often people think we are saying OB- as in Obi wan kenobi from Star WArs!) Not oo-Ve. But like many names it can have different ways to say it. Just curious, does anyone else have an Ove in their family?!? I was sooo thrilled to find this book w/ my son's name!
Kari Harris

I'm glad I saw this comment because I've definitely been mispronouncing his name in my head, sounding it out like the word "of"! But I'm 85 pages into it, so it's going to take a little time to start mentally pronouncing it correctly while reading!
Bella

In Swedish, the letter O is pronounced ooh, as in ooh-la-la. The E at the end is soft, "eh". It's Ooh-veh, or Ooh-weh, depending upon the Swede pronouncing it - some turn all Vs into Ws, some make an effort to pronounce the V as we do in English.
Patricia

I wish a narrator would learn how to pronounce the main character's name! It drove me crazy! I have no clue why he would pronounce an "O" as a "U"!? I'm Swedish and you say the " O" as you would in "boot". You also pronounce the "e", it's not silent! "e" is said like you say "e" in electric.
Lisa
And that's probably why the Hollywood movie changed it to Otto.

OO-veh sounds right. I know a Swedish guy named Thomas, but it's pronounced TOO-mos. I certainly wouldn't go with a Norwegian pronunciation for a Swedish name.
