A Goodreads user asked Melissa Marr:

Haha, okay, so I just thought of this here today. And I 100% realize this is the question that every author hates (and I commiserate myself as I write as well), but I was just wondering, when you're writing your stories, are your characters real to you, as in do you just write what they're doing/going to do next? Or do you decide what they do? Lol, I hope this makes sense :)

Melissa Marr It definitely makes sense, and I don't hate it at all :)

When I'm writing, it's akin to watching a play on a stage. They're not "real" in the sense that I need medicated, but I see and hear them. Writing is sort of the act of taking notes on the play they're enacting.
