Goodreads asked Andrew Pyper:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Andrew Pyper The Damned was born, I think, in my observation of our recent fascination with where we go when we die. Proof of Heaven and memoirs of near-death experience were not only popular, they seemed to speak of a need to know what the afterlife might look like in real terms. To take the afterlife seriously, as real: I found that provocative. Naturally, I was less interested in heaven than the other place downstairs! So the question became one of imagining an underworld that made sense to modern sensibility. I wanted to make my After visceral and plausible and scary, and do it while keeping the fantastical elements to a minimum. Once I had that, Danny and Ash came to me - a long interest in twins - and the two parts of the novel came together.
