Goodreads asked Steven Foote:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Steven Foote My most recent book, Learning to Program, happens to be the only book I have written. The idea for the book came from my experience trying to teach myself to program over the past 7 years. I started programming much later in life than many of my colleagues, and I struggled with almost every concept. Programming was like nothing I had ever done before, and I didn't know where to turn for help. All of the books and blogs I was reading assumed that I already knew a lot about programming and computers. When reading other books and blogs, I didn't know what was crucially important and what was insignificant.

I wanted a book that would teach me what to learn first, what to learn next, and how to think like a programmer. I never found that book, and so I wrote it.
