Neeru Iyer
Neeru Iyer asked Susan Elizabeth Phillips:

Dearest Susan, I'm an aspiring writer, and as one your biggest fans and as someone who'd like to emulate you, I would like to ask: what are the things that you make sure to include in the perfect first chapter? How do you go about crafting the killer first line and the chapter?

Susan Elizabeth Phillips Oh, jeeze..... I have written some great first chapters (NATURAL BORN CHARMER) and some total, disastrous terrible ones! (Which I'm not naming because...maybe readers didn't notice?! :-) First key is to jump right into the story! Move exposition later in the chapter or into the next chapter. Look for a great hook. Sometimes a first line will just pop into my head, and that's a gift. (NBC and LADY BE GOOD.) Sometimes it's a terrible struggle and (frankly) I kinda come out battered.
