I don't know if this was answered in the book, but why did Laura's father request her to marry sir Glyde? because Her father is described as an honourable man etc but there must have been some dodgy circumstances for him to put his daughter in danger?

He was pleasant when he came to visit before they were married, and he was a Sir, which is a big deal, and he owned a large estate. I think no one knew but Anne's mother knew the father. I'm not sure the father even know - although he probably figured it out when the girls look like twins.(less)
