The author himself was a prisoner of war in Dresden during the bombing, and quite a bit of the war parts are the author's experiences. A big theme of the book is free will, so that's why the "pure nonsense" with the tralfamadorians are present. Their philosophy is that good and bad things happen, and will always happen.
