Krysha Thayer asked Jennifer Ashley:

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

Jennifer Ashley Now for some writing-related questions: When did I know I wanted to be an author? When I was about eight. I realized that books were made-up stories written down. I made up stories all the time--acted them out with my dolls or friends or imaginary friends. I started writing things down, and kind of learned by doing. When I was I think 13, my mother gave me a book called "The Writers' Handbook" which is put out by The Writer magazine. It was not only filled with essays on many aspects of writing, but had a directory of magazine and book publishers, and explained how you went about submitting a ms. I realized, "Wow, this is real! People actually work at this; they don't sit around waiting to be discovered." From then on I kept researching the book market as I kept writing stories I loved. I've always written with an eye to publication. I don't know why, but it seemed logical.
