Goodreads asked John Rachel:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

John Rachel When I was in high school, I saved all of the notes we passed, every book of matches and candy wrapper, even the receipts from the dry cleaners where I used to take my shirts. I put them in a huge pile in my living room, picked them out one at a time, looked, then wrote the first thing that popped into my head. This predictably resulted in a completely unreadable, incomprehensible heap of nonsense. I sent this to my editor along with photos of me in the bathtub doing erotic poses with a score of yellow rubber ducks __ he has a crush on me and has a polymer fetish to boot __ and told him to get to work. He cleaned it up a bit, and voila! There you have the masterpiece that has confused readers and critics alike, and sunk my career as a novelist, forcing me to get a job driving the Zamboni ice resurfacing machine at our local skating rink.
