Read a lot. It helps develop your vocabulary and your voice. Write a lot, and have somebody you trust help you identify weaknesses. Remember that using a spell-check program is not the same as proofreading, and verify your facts. As a reader, I get distracted by characters using things that I know hadn't been invented at the time the story takes place.
