Dante Ndlovu
Dante Ndlovu asked Catherine Ryan Hyde:

After having established yourself, how do you stay motivated to produce work that comes from you and not from the wave of public and editorial expectations?

Catherine Ryan Hyde That's really a very good question, Dante. Initially I was lucky. When Pay It Forward hit big, I had three other earlier novels I hadn't been able to sell yet. (It didn't seem lucky back when I couldn't sell them.) So I was able to follow up with work that was already written, rather than produced under the pressure of what I thought was expected of me. These days the problem more or less takes care of itself, because as soon as my mind gets tangled up in what people want me to write, I freeze up and get blocked. Only by putting aside all the down-the-road stuff about who will like it am I able to move forward and get the work done.
