Basically, he says that while the redundancies and irrelevant bits in Dumas' writing may cry out for editing, they also assist the "inattentive" or forgetful reader (since it was originally serialized), and help to build tension, making the extra reading worth the effort. It also reads pretty fast, which helps make up for it.(less)
