Goodreads asked David F. Capps:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

David F. Capps READ. Pick several top rated authors in the field of your interest and read as much of their work as you can. Reading will imprint your subconscious mind with style and how content is formatted. The more you read, the more that imprinting will emerge into your writing. The next step is to WRITE and have your writing reviewed by others. Critical comments aren't meant to hurt you, they are flags, showing you what to look at and what to re-evaluate in your writing. Finally, find an experienced developmental editor and work with them. Yes, it costs money, but if you are serious about writing, you have to invest in your future.
