Sometime before the owl visits Frederick, his mom is thinking about what the doctors had said about his recovery.
'The doctors claim Frederick retains no memories, that his brain maintains only basic functions, but there are moments when she wonders.'
Maybe the incident with the owl is just one of those moments.(less)
