I read 'Speak' back when I was 12. It was, and still is, one of my most prized possessions. I also loved 'Wintergirls'. Was it hard to write these books? I mean, to get into the mindset and do justice to victims of serious issues like rape or anorexia.

Every book has its own challenges. I think a book that deals with serious issues like these requires the author to have an open heart and be willing to listen without judgement to the experiences of people who have dealt with them.

Greetings I am an English Professor in the Bilingual School Luis Muñoz Iglesias in Cidra, Puerto Rico. Recently, my students from 11th grade read your novel "Speak" for my class. As a teacher, I assign them the novel because of its meaning and the importance it has for young people and even us teachers. Most of my students asked about if the novel was based on a real life story?
