Hi Catherine, I read Pay it Forward and Becoming Chloe in my 20s and your portrayal of determined gay characters really inspired me, thank you. I enjoyed how different characters overcome issues to make a difference even if it is a small difference for one character. When you writing do you start with a basic message you are trying to get across or does one emerge during the process?
Catherine Ryan Hyde
That's a great question, Graeme. I don't start with a message because writing a book "message first" can feel heavy-handed to me. But I don't literally wait for one to emerge as I write, because the book won't be much without it. I think it comes out as I develop the story idea. Then, when I really understand what the story has to say, I can get started.

Hi Catherine. I just read Allie and Bea and loved it. Question: At the end Allie said "Manuela was wrong. Bea didn't steal my stuff" Who was Manuela? And how did Allie get her Alpaca suitcases back? I thought Brick stole them. I've looked but finally gave up. Thanks in advance :)

Dear Ms. Hyde, I am super excited about your newest book coming out on the 19th, as it's on my birthday. It will be the second book of yours I've read (plan on catching up on all of them over the coming months). May I ask what inspired the story for "Brave Girl, Quiet Girl"? The plot sounds so intriguing, and I do not believe I've seen any books with anything close to it in a long time! Thank you again for writing.

After reading too many books that made me wonder how do these authors get so many great reviews, I purchased, Say Goodbye for Now, via Amazon.de, because it had only two reviews. Since I'm an author, and don't have many reviews, I thought I would support an author in the same predicament Ha... little did I know that you are an author with an impressive record! Was your career beginning a struggle?
