Eve
you do not have to read every summer after to understand one golden summer, so no, you don't have to read the first one.
however, if you are planning to read both, they have to be read in order, or you'll be majorly spoiled for every summer after.

Dawn
I would or else you'll be spoiled for the first book. If you read Every Summer After, you'll already be in love with the characters from that book when they show up in this one. You'll also get to know Charlie and know his backstory. Every Summer After is my favorite book so I highly recommend it.
