Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

David Hartness Amani's River is based on the Mozambican civil war. I spent two and a half years in Mozambique as a Peace Corps volunteer. The people, culture and my work inspired me to tell a virtually untold story. I wanted to depict the true ramifications of violence and brutal act of recruiting, capturing and brainwashing children to become valuable weapons.
