How did you feel about the many changes in the film version of Under the Tuscan Sun? I saw the movie first and then read the book. They seemed 2 completely different stories! Were you allowed to be involved in the script in any way?

I conferred with the screenwriter/director and we came up with some joint strategies, but my contribution was limited to that, and to finding a house for them to use as "Bramasole." There are many divergences but the basic story is the same. Movies and books are always different, aren't they?

My question is how are the aging population treated over in Italy and what I am actually interested in would it be a good place for retirement in my later years. I seriously have envisioned a retirement of travel but living in England, France and never have been to Italy and always was enamored by your books and your experiences. I really am thinking of living abroad for a while when I retire.

I have always had a passion for travel, and I love that you compare Italy to the south, as I can so see the similarities. The south has a reputation amongst those that are from there as being small minded and anything but worldly, (which I know is incorrect!). The south is also known for family values, and close knit families. What inspired you to write about your southern roots in detail now?
