January Never crossed my mind. He's alive in my book.
judith He must have recognized that he was having a heart attack & turned back for help in time for his family to find him semi-conscious outside & call 911. His life was flashing before his eyes, but the squad came & he could hear them talking & had visions of the hospital, so I think he got there in time & lived. How else would he know all the details about his future grandson's birth?!

Karen I think Ed died. It was clearly his life moments passing before his eyes. His grandson is named for him, "the next Edward Kapenash. They're calling him Teddy."

Lisa Post He was possibly having another heart attack and flashbacks. Not sure if he survives but the mention of seeing his grandson might mean he did? She writes that he’s numb in the face and chest tightening as he stands on the beach at the end?
Paulette Oland I was actually thinking the same thing. There were many flashbacks as well as future happenings. Does he actually see the birth of his grandchild in person or from above? Based on the title Swan Song, I think he passes away.
Katy Cellucci I was wondering the same thing.
