(view spoiler)[I have read all of your books and they’re all favourites of mine! I love the way you present and combine the magic systems, the lore and ideologies of your worlds, not to mention the political intrigues! Looking forward to The Strength of the Few, and just a curiosity of mine. In my native language Vis means “dream”; did you give this name to Diago on purpose as to reflect his otherness to the world he’s infiltrating? (hide spoiler)]

Thank you!! I actually chose his name based off the Latin – it means ‘force’, ‘power’, ‘strength’ – partly as a nod to his character, and partly because it’s the very thing he refuses to give up to the Hierarchy. But I love that it happens to have that meaning as well! (I just looked it up – Romanian, I believe?)

In Will of the Many you referenced the “Catalan Games” and that Ianix was the champion. Since there is a Catalan region in our world, is this a reference to that, or is it an Easter egg, or am I over thinking it? Loved this book so much and counting down the days to SOTF!!

I’m beginning to write my first book just as a little side thing for fun. I planned for weeks on what I was going to write, but im 7 chapters in and have completely gone off script. Wanted to ask you about your writing process and how much you plan ahead and how much just comes to you as you go? I know there’s a lot of twists and turns that require planning, but do you ever catch yourself going completely off script?

Hi James! I got into Licanius through Michael Kramer audiobook, and WotM is currently my all-time fave book. I have two (slightly silly) questions: 1) There's a lot less 'acceding', 'inclined their head', 'companionable silence', and 'wry smiles' in WotM. How much of that is your natural growth as a writer vs the editor forcing you to change it? 2) Do you consider the name Dioggo (for Diago the Alupi) to be canon?
