I think it was suicide. Joel had been manipulated by Conor to steal Santana's insulin. He probably realized the consequences of such a decision and could not live with himself. Hanging did not seem (to me) to be the type of thing Conor would do.

It was the only weak point in the book - just a sentence telling what happened to Joel. Should have been a scene in which the others found his body. I’m kind of shocked because Ware is such an excellent writer, she should have known that it needed an additional scene.

I think Ware literally forgot about him and wrote those 2 micro-sentences later when an editor pointed it out.

Who knows, & honestly who cares about any of them by this point in the story? This was a boring DNF...I skimmed the end & it didn't get any better.

It seemed like "Joel's gone" was 2 sentences. One, we read he committed suicide hanging himself from a tree. And another sentence where we're told he has 'survivor's guilt'. I don't know. I just believe the suicide. Seems like he'd feel more guilty about stealing someone's meds, or colluding with the evil dictator. It felt inserted as an after thought.
