An ARC is an Advance Review Copy - Some authors offer their readers a chance to be sent a copy of the book before the release date, possibly before the final proofing/editing is finished. The purpose is so that they can have it read and leave an honest (but hopefully positive) review on the book as soon as it goes on sale, which may entice others to buy. Often it is only a few days or a week early, but if you're a big fan and are dying for the book to be released you'll take anything right? :-)
