James H. Pence Learn your craft before you pursue publication. It's so easy to self-publish in today's high-tech world, a lot of writers are rushing into print (or e-book) before they have developed a high level of writing skill. I studied the craft of fiction for several years before I ever wrote my novels. I read novels by authors whose writing I enjoyed. I marked them up and studied how they developed character, setting, and plot. And I read more books on novel writing than I can count.
