If it didn't occur to me until the very end, I can see how characters/people who experienced years of indoctrination wouldn't even consider it an option.

Also, thinking about this question reminded me about a story I read about survivors of the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown who refused to leave their home, even though they fully understood the risks. There is even anecdotal evidence that people who were relocated after Chernobyl didn't live as long as those who stayed in that toxic place, which is so counterintuitive. I guess for me, the connection is the power of home and community, and that may be more compelling than freedom if that means being isolated from the world you know. (less)
