To me it was obvious that they could be tracked. Now whether this group had anyone who felt strong enough to test this tracking system to the extend of escape. Doesn't seem so, at least not in the backward-reflecting parts of the story. That they have been socialized to accept their situation/fates is a big part of the story in my view. (less)
