It's easily the best, and you don't need to read the prequels to understand it at all. See how you feel after that. I kind of wish I hadn't bothered with the rest of the series, but I can certainly understand reading them if you're looking for more books like LD. I just felt like they didn't live up its standards, and they occasionally contradicted the backstory given in LD.(less)
