When you're writing fiction do you develop the whole plot first and then write the story?

Yes, I am a big believer structure. I think the story must be able to stand on it's own, be magical and interesting even if all the pretty words and colorful characters are removed and the plot is boiled down to a one-paragraph summary. So I start there and then fill in everything else.
Of course, other writers do it the opposite way (Stephen King for instance) so it's just a matter of preference and personality.

I have never seen one of your talks but you spoke at my sisters middle school several years ago and she told me all about it. And you still inspired me when I was just a little 4th grader. I was just wondering if you knew that you have had a positive effect on people that haven't even seen a speech, read your books, or watched your videos?
