Pamela
Pamela asked Malcolm Tudor:

Hello: My father was a British solider also a POW in Italy and there doesn't seem to be much information out there. He ended up in a Nazi POW camp once the Italians surrendered. How did these British POWs in Italy end up in Nazi prison camps?

Malcolm Tudor A good question, Pamela, thank you. Almost eighty thousand British and Allied POWs were held in camps across Italy in September 1943 when the Italian Government surrendered. In response, the Germans quickly occupied the country and soon brought the Fascist regime back too. Many of the POWs were able to escape in the first confused days, but the majority were carted off to Germany in railway cattle trucks and held there until the liberation in 1945. There's lots of information on the books website www.emiliapublishing.com and I've helped many readers with their quests over more than twenty years. Best wishes, Malcolm Tudor
