Goodreads asked B.C. Ray:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

B.C. Ray I began writing this when my wife was all about vampires. I have always liked the classic monsters (vampires and werewolves). I felt like vampires were being done poorly at the time and wanted to make something different. I ended up looking into the empuse who did not just drink blood, but actually ate people. I liked tying some of the current vampire additions to an older tradition, linking it to something much more primal in Greek mythology.

I started writing this in third person and my beta readers said it was ok. They liked parts of it, but I just wasn’t happy with it. I ended up editing it to death. Once it was lifeless, I decided to scrap it and start again. I went with the first person stream of conscious perspective that I tend to gravitate towards in short stories. It breathed a new life into the story that I like a lot.

I have more ideas on how to expand the world but I wanted to keep this story focused on Hector and his experience. If the story does well, I will move to Layla’s POV and expand on her history as an empuse.
