Goodreads asked Sumiko Nakano:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Sumiko Nakano The inspiration for "Shadows of the Naginata" primarily stemmed from my fascination with Nakano Takeko, a renowned female samurai warrior, and my connection to her lineage. Intrigued by her story and the broader context of 19th-century Japan, particularly during the Boshin War, I sought to create a narrative that would do justice to her legacy and the tumultuous period she lived in.

The book delves into Takeko's life, portraying her not only as a skilled warrior but also as a woman challenging the gender norms of her time. My aim was to present a nuanced view of her struggles and triumphs, blending historical accuracy with a fictional reimagining of her journey.

Researching her life and the era she lived in was crucial in crafting the storyline. I wanted to ensure that the narrative was rich in historical detail while remaining accessible and engaging. By focusing on Takeko's resilience, skill, and defiance against societal constraints, "Shadows of the Naginata" became a tribute to her spirit and a reflection on the broader themes of honor, gender roles, and rebellion against traditional norms.

The novel was also an opportunity to explore my personal interests in martial arts and Japanese history, allowing me to create a vivid and immersive portrayal of 19th-century Japan, its culture, and the challenges faced by women in the samurai class.
