Did anyone else have trouble understanding the necessity for including the letters from Elizabeth back in the post-Civil War Era and their significance in the present day story?

Notice that the character's names in both the historic and the current time storylines are essentially the same: Jack the boarder and Jack the boyfrie…moreNotice that the character's names in both the historic and the current time storylines are essentially the same: Jack the boarder and Jack the boyfriend; Libby and Lily (both nick names for Elizabeth); and Phinneas and Finn. So obviously the author intends for these to be parallel stories, but to what end? I am also confused.(less)
