Janet Meenehan I reread it to look for clues and found even more little tibits of connection. However, I did not see a clear linkage explaining the relationship between Nate and Son of Man. They both hailed from Hemlock Row, Nate as a Love and SOM as a Lowgod. Nate's life took a dark turn after his father became violent and Nate murdered him. As an orphan, Nate was on his own and turned to a life of crime, essentially becoming a hit man for the community. In an oblique reference, the story notes that SOM as good as a father to Nate. The community had mixed feelings about Nate’s actions and after his prison time, he didn't return to Hemlock Row. SOM's predilection, unacceptable in Hemlock, found somewhat free reign in Pennhurst. Miggy in the chapter Duck Boy speaks of this history, but she speaks in parables, leaving gaps. When Nate says he doesn't know SOM, she responds "It doesn't matter...He knows you."
How SOM knows Nate I could not clearly discern.
Jeannie I may be really up in the night on this, but here are some thoughts. I was at first put off a bit by the name Son of Man as that is a name used for Christ. However, the term is usually followed up by Son of God. With out that part, the character in the book is merely human and thus literally and figuratively forgiven by Love when told that it wasn't his fault.

Lori For some reason I wondered if Son of Man was perhaps Nate’s son.
Cara Cantlon Did Miggy betray Nate to Son of Man?
Lindsey Thomas I read this part twice to see if I missed any specifics, about why Nate would have said “it’s not your fault” before stabbing Son of Man. I felt it was an unstated acknowledgement of something that happened on Hemlock Hill that made Son of Man the way he was.
Arlene Rawlinson Why do you think McBride named the evil Son of Man the same name as referenced in the New Testament about Jesus?
J What were Nate's crimes?
Helen Ann Why does Nate say to son of man that it’s not his fault?

Cheryl Gillette What was Nate’s connection with Bullis?
