asked:
Did anyone else get a veiled threat from Josie's letter to Alix when she says Leon is such a sweet boy, and she's always had a soft spot for him? Then says to "take care of him...keep him safe." I imagine Josie trying to kidnap Leon for revenge, but the book ended!

I wondered if Lisa Jewell were setting things up for a sequel.

I TOTALLY felt that when she specifically mentioned Leon. I’d be putting a microchip in him ASAP!

Josie stole so many things from Alix, I could see her stealing Leon too!

I wasn’t sure what the threat was exactly, but definitely that statement was threatening. I think Josie was so manipulative they she didn’t really even realize how threatening she was. Or, not that she didn’t realize, exactly. Maybe more that it was so much a part of her personality that she said things like they without any regard for how they would be perceived.

Yes. I also thought this showed some of Josie’s obsession with Leon. She didn’t seem to both much at all with the daughter.
“Leon nods seriously. Josie lets her eyes linger on his hands, still plumped up with whatever it is that lives under the skin of young children. There's a scab on the knuckle of his thumb and she remembers scabs. She remembers verrucas and nits and ingrown toenails and baby teeth hanging on by threads and all the other tiny, perfect defects of small children. She resists the urge to touch the scab, to give it a magic kiss. She resists the urge to say, "Oh no, you have an owe. She feels the loss of her children so viscerally and horribly that she could scream with the agony of it.”

Considering the title of this book, you always have to question what did or did not actually happen. So, after their chance meeting at the restaurant, maybe Alix didn't really let Josie glom onto her. All of this (including the kidnapping scheme) could be Josie fantasizing about getting back at Alix, teaching her a lesson...what if it's all just in Josie's twisted mind?

Yes, I did get that feeling too.
