Dena asked Beth Revis:

First of all your books are amazing and are some of the best books i've read. How do you come up with names for your character? I find that the hardest thing about writing.

Beth Revis Thanks so much!

And...I have a very silly answer for names. They're just the first ones that popped in my head. I always intended to change Amy, but by the time I finished, it fit her.

(I actually had a huge backstory for her name--that Amaryllises were her favorite flower, and she was frozen with a bulb of them--and Amy came from "Amaryllis," but that got too complicated. But that IS why Elder gives Amy a huge flower when she first moves into the Hospital--that flower was supposed to be similar to an Amaryllis.)

But anyway--yeah, it's kind of random. The names just sort of pop up in my head. I can't really think of any name I've ever changed after coming up with them. If I DO struggle with a name, I pop on "baby name" websites.
