I wondered too, Justine was a good example of an unreliable narrator. She was likeable at first, but the way she turned her back on Amy when she was being bullied was awful. Another example of her character flaws was that she had an abortion and never told Dom, even after they were married.

I wonder if the author deliberately makes us question this as part of her wider comment on manipulation. Mrs Price manipulates everyone, but there are small manipulations everywhere in the book. The children are always manoeuvring to become Mrs Price’s pet and also to be popular with each other. Justine was especially vulnerable having recently lost her mother and suffering from seizures that make her confused and forgetful. I wondered if she was making everything up in her head right until Mrs Price snapped and strangled her and even then I questioned whether the whole scenario was a fantasy of her own making.
